DeVon

DeVon was born in Hollywood, CA in 1968 eight months after the tragic death of his young film producer father of the same name.  His mother remarried and through a series of moves growing up in the bay area eventually relocated to a small rural town near Park City, Utah.  There DeVon excelled in classical and jazz music and received a scholarship to college in Music.  However, after a commercial success screen-printing fine art designs combined with dada poetry on T- shirts for rock concerts and specialty stores he changed his degree to visual arts.  During his academic career in painting and drawing at the University of Utah, he found himself learning the most about being an artist by promoting other students and faculty, organizing collaborative shows with them.  He gained the attention of the Dean of Fine Arts who encouraged and sponsored an innovative bachelor's degree designed specifically for him called Arts Promotion.  This degree would include an internship at the curator's office of the Supreme Court of the United States, and extensive studies abroad of art history and language in Europe where DeVon became fluent in the Spanish, French, and Italian languages.  Upon graduation, DeVon continued to collaborate with other artists and promote their work through managing and owning galleries in Beverly Hills, Laguna Beach, Carmel, San Francisco, Park City, and Aspen, CO.  

He has lectured in academies of art in Russia, France, Italy, China, South America, and throughout the United States. A contemporary pop artist in the vein of Andy Warhol, DeVon continues to screen print images sourced from his own photographs, or from popular culture and mass advertising.  Through the tragic death of his Hollywood father, whom he never knew, he relates to the tragic loss and haunting beauty in Hollywood icons, Rock legends, and dreamers.  He seeks to connect with his subjects in their moment of truth, their eternal NOW moment when the past is gone and the future does not yet exist, and encrust that moment in heavenly light through diamond dust, Swarovski crystal, black light, or vibrant color.  He works in a multi-media of acrylic paint, linen, diamond dust, crystal, enamel, embedded light/black light, shadow box, wood, and plexiglass, sometimes creating a three dimensional world of multiple layers of plexiglass viewers can get lost in and experience a glimpse of the truth in his subjects.  He embraces mass advertising and celebrity by working directly with both entities to create ingenious corporate branded events and awareness at his exhibitions.  Every January he opens his Park City studio that is headquartered in the heart of the Sundance Film Festival, and collaborates with Festival organizers hosting rock concerts, private film parties, and a Hollywood nightclub scene in his elegant but intimate gallery/studio space.  He has worked together with some of the most recognized celebrities and entertainment executives in the entertainment industry.  He has hosted countless film premiere parties including parties for Paris Hilton, and two academy-award winning films The Cove, a documentary, and Precious, a feature film starring Mariah Carey.  He has organized collaborative exhibitions at his studio with musician-turned-artists Brandon Boyd of Incubus, Mark Mothersbough of DEVO, Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, Pete Wentz of Fall out Boy, pop artists Peter Max and Steve Kaufman.  Music performances have been in cooperation with ASCAP, The Fray, Leanne Rimes, Lady Antebellum, Gunther, and a solo performance by Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead for the first time in 50 years.  He works with high fashion brands to create art for their corporate images and associate that image with worldwide-recognized Film, TV, and Music producers, directors, and celebrities.
